There’s a lesson here, somewhere.
A few years back — against my better judgment — I accepted an attorney who I will call “Bruce, Esq.” into the Speak-a-Book program.
What made me hesitate?
He had been an SEO client of our sister marketing company, Speakeasy Marketing, for almost a year. And he was often rude to our staff, even when they bent over backward to help him get more clients (which he did).
Anyway, I agreed to help him author a book, since he and I always seemed to get on well, and I figured that he was just “misunderstood”.
Big mistake.
When it came time to go through the “deep dive” interview, where I use carefully written interview questions to get your book content down on paper in a form and structure that is suitable for a book, Bruce was… pissy.
He wouldn’t answer my questions.
Or, if he did, it would be with one-sentence answers.
Not really book material.
After about 20 minutes of this, Bruce decided to terminate the interview. Despite my urging him to go back over the answers and expand upon them, he felt that he had given me enough “material” to get his book done.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, we refunded Bruce’s money and terminated his Speak-a-Book project. Why? Because getting content out of his head was like getting blood from a stone. Despite his years of experience, despite the plethora of accolades and war stories that Bruce had accumulated over his distinguished career, it seemed he didn’t have anything interesting to say.
Why am I sharing this anecdote with you?
To make an important point:
Our service is called “Speak-a-Book”, not “Think-a-Book”.
When you and I jump on the phone for the “deep dive” interview, you need to have something interesting to say. Now, don’t get me wrong. You’re not going to be cross-examined. The interview lasts about 60-90 minutes, and we’re going to agree on all the questions, and their order, before the call.
There are no surprises, and I’ve made the process as easy and enjoyable as humanly possible. But you need to answer in a reasonable level of detail.
My team is clever. But we can’t turn two words into a book.
Enough said.
