The Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017 eliminated the deduction for https://turbo-tax.org/, among many others. The act is in force through 2025, and there’s no way to predict what will happen then.

Can you claim relocation expenses on your taxes?

However, the IRS allows you to claim the deduction in the year you move. To claim the deduction, you must report all relocation expenses on IRS Form 3903 and attach it to the personal tax return that covers the year of your move.

An additional fee applies for online. Additional state programs are extra. Most state programs are available in January. Online AL, DC and TN do not support nonresident forms for state e-file. Software DE, HI, LA, ND and VT do not support part-year or nonresident forms. Moving Expenses Use Form 3903 to figure your moving expense deduction for a move related to the start of work at a new principal place of work . If the new workplace is outside the United States or its possessions, you must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien to deduct your expenses.

Consequences for Violating this Policy

Staff and faculty to whom this policy applies must ensure their move takes place within 12 months of the start of the new job. The reimbursement is payable from individual department budgets. Submit completed reimbursement documentation to Rose Hassett () in Accounts Payable. No reimbursement shall be provided for household goods and personal effects in excess of 12,000 pounds. Accounts Payable will review the completed Travel Expense Voucher and determine which relocation reimbursements are allowable. Reimbursement is not allowed if the appointee knows or reasonably should have known that relocation was imminent prior to entering a lease agreement. Household goods and personal effects include furniture, clothing, household appliances, and other items that are usual and necessary for the maintenance of a household.

Reimbursement Procedures

University supervisors are responsible for promoting the understanding of this policy and for taking appropriate steps to help ensure compliance with it.
